Trial: tDCS for Alleviating Hallucinations

An interesting trial in the United Kingdom involving tDCS, or transcranial electrical stimulation: stimulation to the visual cortex in blind patients to reduce the hallucinations they perceive. Utilizing a technique that involves passing a weak electrical current between electrodes on the patient’s scalp can change activity levels in different brain regions. An emerging 18-month study from Newcastle University and Kings College London is utilizing tDCS devices to promisingly alleviate the occurrence of visual hallucinations in Charles Bonnet Syndrome. Results published from the study indicate that the devices do reduce the frequency at which hallucinations occur. The study was positive for the people involved. With no significant side effects, they are indicating more work with a bigger testing pool to further test if the application could be considered for clinical applications.
